MEXICO - THE YUCATAN PENINSULA
climbing the tallest structure of the ruins of coba, nohoch mul, with its 42m is extremely exhausting after a hot and wet walk through the jungle.
I don't remember too clearly, but it was either this great view or the one at ek balam over the jungle that gave me the idea that I really HAD to buy an indiana jones pinball machine :-)
even dr. jones doesn't go out when a tropical storm hits: it rains IN BUCKETS so that you can't see the hand before your eyes not to mention the next cabana on the beach. this goes on for about 15 minutes and then it's over as fast as it had begun.
if the rain slowly or quickly seeps through the roof of you cabana, never mind, the temperatures are in general so high that your clothes dry very quickly. and as there is no electricity in a cabana, who cares about water?
in these moments it is crucial whether you have chosen the right hostel or not: you can't do anything but watch the rain fall or... READ! however, english-language literature in mexico is scarce and so we depended on a "traveler's book exchange":
you give away your old books and get just as many "new" books from other travelers. a real life saver!
one advantage of mexico (in contrast to jamaica) is that the surf is better! and after a tropical storm, even the shorebreak looks dangerous...
on the last picture I'm not looking too happy - after all the days in the sun I wasn't really too keen on going back to good old cold and damp europe again.
do you know what a wanna-be-place is? it's a secret, hidden, and perfect place you can escape to if you need to get away. physically or mentally.
mexico is my wanna-be-place. I can go there whenever I want to. and in times I need to. it works. really.
