MEXICO - THE YUCATAN PENINSULA
having enough of pyramids and ruins for the time being we took a ride to the northern coast of the yucatan peninsula to a little town called rio lagartos.
basically there is nothing special in rio lagartos, but a huuuuuuge swamp which serves as an ecosystem reserve for rare birds, and so it is home to thousands of long legged pink flamingos
and to some strang water animals who look like a mixture between the teenage mutant ninja turtles and alien.
very creepy, indeed.
we just asked a local fisherman (who turned out to be a marine biologist) to take us through the reserve and had an adventure which included lots of lianas, a horizon full of birds and, unfortunately, no alligators.

the vast swampland of the region proved a problem for the locals who were forced to adopt their customs to the land they lived in: the tombstones in the picture vary in height (up to three meters)
and are used, because the ground is to wet to bury the dead.
well, at least we weren't caught on this graveyard at MIDNIGHT.... brrrrrrr......
have you ever heard of voodoo? mexico is voodo-f***ing-country!!!
on the other hand, it may be the local beer that is responsible for halucinations and illusions of different kinds.... ;-)
