JAMAICA
for a late breakfast just head to one of the many catering huts on the beach - take calaloo and eggfish to try something local. it really tastes nice - a bit like scrambled egg with spinach and salted fish, but great.
(the expression on Irmi's face is one of total bliss, really ;-) )
and wash your food down with a BIG cup of jamaican coffee (from the blue hills region). strong and black, just like coffee should be. have I mentioned that my life doesn't work without coffee?
I guess I'm an addict...
heading east on the island, we found refuge in a montessori school (I can't get away from teaching, you know) called nix-nax rainbow isle of light.
school children scramble around in the schoolyard and the walls are adorned with conscious raising adages (like the dolphins in the dolphin room where we stayed).
run by dominica, a harlem born imigrant, the atmosphere is, well... mind-opening... ;-)
well, that's it so far... and now: some FOOD TIPS!!
if you ever go to jamaica, eat JERK!!! it is meat/beef/chicken seasoned in a mixture of island-grown spices (including jamaican hot pepper) and grilled over an open fire.
you can buy it on the beaches or in the streets. and be sure to buy LOTS of red stripe beer as well to wash down the excrutiatingly hot taste!!! (and I mean that!) :-)
oh, and finally: DON'T GO TO KINGSTON. it's not worth it.
